Staff searching
Getting to ALL the records, finding suppressed records

About Staff searching

Why would you want staff searching? For collection development, acquisition, and cataloging activities, trouble-shooting problems, finding test records, etc.

Library staff are able to access all records in Summit, including suppressed records, from the character-based OPAC.

Bibliographic, item, order and checkin records can be suppressed independent of one another. In other words, one item may be coded to display and another to suppress. Depending on local policies, records may be suppressed in these situations: missing, considered for withdrawal, withdrawn, on order, order canceled, etc.; and “test” records for staff use.

How to do it

You will be able to get to the real staff mode and find all records only when you start from "outside" the local catalog search program: “telnet” to Summit (summit.orbiscascade.org).  Or, go to Summit on the web, and click on the link for <Text only access>.  Instead of logging in as “catalog” use the login name and password provided by your institution representative, or Alliance staff.

(From "inside" the local catalog search program: If you select an option to Search Summit, or pass through a search from a browse menu, even if you had started from a staff main menu, the search program transfers the data and it is processed as a public search; the results will not include suppressed records.)

The ability to access "staff-only" records in Summit is controlled by a setting in the local innopac. The local innopac sends the command (Search Summit, from the Staff Main Menu) to Summit allowing access to the Summit staff main menu.
