The question
Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 11:44:30 -0700 (PDT) From: Nancy NathansonTo: Orbis Circ e-mail list Subject: OB Requests for items checked out To: Orbis circ contacts From: Nancy N. ** OB requests for items checked out: # days until due ** Keep the OB reqest (Hold) vs. .CANCEL with re-request or .RECALL or .Implement SMART HOLDS On August 3, Caroline at UP asked for some discussion about the varying practices among Orbis members regarding holding on to or canceling holds, i.e. OB requests, and how that relates to the stated goal of 2-day delivery. ... There's another, immediate objective to collecting and reviewing the information: it should help lead to a decision on how to set one of the variables now available to us with Release 2001 as part of "Smart Holds". See #2 in the list below. For implementing smart holds, we can set 3 variables: 1. maximum number of holds (then reject subsequent requests) 2. maximum days until Due (will not allow hold for item with later Due Date) 3. maximum days Overdue (will not allow hold for item overdue more than n days) For more info on Smart Holds feature see previous email repeated below, and the Circ section on this web page: R2001 features

** Smart Holds **
Following up on several decisions from the Orbis Borrowing Committee
meeting yesterday, smart holds will be turned on very soon. I've already
contacted Innovative Interfaces to begin the work, and will let you know
as soon as I hear when the feature will be turned on.
FYI, OBC selected the following values to be used when the system
determines whether a _patron request_ will be accepted or denied:
Max number of HOLDS already on item: 1
Max days until item DUE: 14
Max days item is OVERDUE: 10
The Smart Holds feature includes several other improvements, as well. For
more information, see "Release 2001 INN-Reach features" -- scroll down a
little past half way to find the detailed description of Circulation
features.
Note: To achieve a maximum of only 1 hold already on an item, III sets the value to "0" which means items with more than 0 holds cannot be requested. If the value were set to 1, a 2nd hold would be allowed.
