Local setup options for renewals (in addition to Orbis Patron loan rule setup)
from Innovative Interfaces Inc. instructions, Feb. 27, 2001: The ... sites can turn on renewals for INN-Reach items
only by allowing them only in the INN-Reach patron loanrule; but they will
have to consider how to allow these renewals.
For example, will patrons be allowed to renew their own items? Or will it
have to be done at the circulation desk? Here is some information from
the user manual (Innovative, not INN-Reach) for them to consider (see
below). Note that for the INN-Reach renewals, if an item to be renewed is
overdue, fines will automatically be assigned if Renewals: Overdue items
can be renewed? is set to value 2 or 3.
Opac Options
Patron can renew own items
Set this option to "YES" if the library allows patrons to renew their own
checked-out items in the VIEW your circulation record function. Note that
INNOPAC will allow a patron to use this function to renew an overdue item,
providing no fine or demerit points would be assessed, and no overdue or
recall notice has been sent to the patron for this item. This option will
only be available for setting if the library allows patrons to view their
own records, otherwise, INNOPAC will display "N/A".
Renewals: Overdue items can be renewed?
There are three possible choices for this option:
1 > NO - Block renewal of overdue items.
2 > YES - Allow renewal of overdue items. If a fine is owed, INNOPAC
will prompt you to decide whether to deny renewal, renew and add the fine, or
renew without charging the patron. If no fine is owed, INNOPAC will
prompt you to decide whether or not to allow renewal.
3 > YES, PROMPT ONLY IF FINE - Allow renewal of overdue items. If a
fine is owed, the procedure is the same as when this option is set to "YES."
If no fine is owed, INNOPAC will automatically renew the item without
notifying you that the item is overdue.
See Renewing Overdue Items for more information about this option.
-----------
Renewals: Check loanrule at time of renewal
This option controls whether or not the system automatically applies the
same loanrule to a renewed item. Possible values are "YES" and "NO."
If you set this option to "NO," INNOPAC automatically renews the item
under the same loanrule applied to the original check-out (i.e., the
loanrule number currently in the Item record's LOANRULE field).
If you set this option to "YES," INNOPAC checks the rule selection table
for the loanrule that now governs the renewal of this item and compares it
with the loanrule already in the Item record. If the two loan rules
differ, the program overwrites the current LOANRULE field with the newer
loan rule. The new loan rule dictates the renewal parameters. If the
loanrules are the same, INNOPAC renews the item under the loanrule
currently in the item's LOANRULE field.
NOTE
If this option is set to "YES", and the LOAN RULES element MAX NUMBER OF
RENEWALS is set to '0,' you need to set the other RENEWAL VARIABLES
elements TIME REMAINING B4 RENEW, FIRST RENEWAL PERIOD, and ADDITIONAL
RENEWAL PERIOD in order to properly handle staff override situations, else
invalid renewal dates may result.
-----------------
Renewals: Allow renewal by item barcode?
This option controls whether or not you may renew an item by scanning the
item's barcode at the R > RENEW prompt. Possible values are "YES" and
"NO." See Renewals for more information on renewing items.

Subject: Renewals - re-start circ ports To: Orbis circ and technical/systems contacts From: Nancy N. ** re-start local circ port to check for local holds along with renewal ** As you make the changes to the Orbis regular 3-week patron and institution loan rule to allow renewals, and add the two new status codes, then re-start your circ ports. Your local system will then re-read the INN-Reach software/table that has just been adjusted, so the system will check for local holds first. says III: "The circ ports at the sites will need to be restarted to register the new settings." thanks!
Notes from Renewal testing group, Spring 2001
a.After adding the new status codes, have somebody restart the webPac or the status labels will just show up as codes, not words.
b.MilCirc doesn't go back and check for local holds. Don't use it.
c.It takes about three minutes for the renewal request to be denied or confirmed in the Web Pac for the patron. Same amount of time in the Text Pac. Same amount of time in the text staff mode (so when you're doing a renewal for a patron standing right there or who is on the phone, you'll have to wait a bit before you can tell them whether it worked).
