Patron verification prompts |
How to change the prompt |
displayed at Visiting Patron checkout |
Recommendation for member institutions: Use University ID instead of Barcode for patron authentication. Barcodes at some institutions are no longer "eye-readable" and are instead imbedded in the magnetic strip. Patrons from a home library using magnetic strips may be unable to use Visiting Patron or Summit Borrowing, unless the patron already knows the number.
Prompts used by member institutions
This table shows the patron verification prompts, or messages displayed to patrons during Requesting (and also displays during Visiting Patron checkout).
Other elements of the patron verification screen, such as the "For example" lines above the input boxes, apply system-wide and are not customizable to individual institutions, agencies or libraries.
Messages were re-written Jan.-Feb. 2003 to comply with III requirements, limited to 62 characters.

Changing the Patron Verification setup
To change the patron verification prompt (Prompt for Patron ID) used in Summit Borrowing, contact Alliance staff who will work with III to make the system change.
Local sites can (and should) manage their prompts and examples for local requesting through the local INNOPAC system. Here's the path:
A > ADDITIONAL system functions
A > ALTER system parameter
S > SYSTEM codes
O > Set system OPTIONS
O > OPAC options
30 > Patron self-identification prompts & examples.......Choose to view
INNOPAC SYSTEM OPTIONS (OPAC options)
Patron self-identification prompts & examples
1 > Prompt for name....................................SYSTEM DEFAULT
2 > Example for name prompt.....Enter your name (example: Jane Smith)
3 > Prompt for patron ID.....................................V-number
4 > Example for patron ID..............................Choose to view
5 > Prompt for PIN................................................N/A
6 > Example for PIN...............................................N/A
7 > Prompt for special instructions....................SYSTEM DEFAULT
8 > Example for special instructions...................SYSTEM DEFAULT
Some of you with sharp eyes may notice that there is also an option to change the tag (index tag) that the system will use for patron verification (for example v or b):
29 > Patron self-identification field.......................V BARCODE
Do Not attempt to change the field, or index (barcode vs. university ID) locally without working with Alliance staff first. If you are changing your patron verification method, for example from Barcode to Univ ID, notify Alliance staff so that the verification tag will be changed simultaneously at both the local site AND at central. If the tags are not synchronized, patrons will have problems trying to Request
Patron verification prompts - displayed to staff during Visiting Patron checkout

** Patron Verification Prompts & Visiting Patron verification **
One Orbis site is having some trouble using Visiting Patron in
character-based circulation. Perhaps others are seeing same and different
problems in character-based and MilCirc or WebOPAC.
There are at least three problems that can account for trouble with using
Visiting Patron at the owning site:
- for a handful of Owning Sites with certain Operating Systems:
if Owning Site hasn't upgraded to Rel.2002-Phase 2 and
had a special fix, or patch, installed to the upgrade
- visiting patron's campus ID card has no visible barcode or
ID number for Owning Site to key in (since VP can't
find a patron by name, the patron will need to
tell you verbally what ID number to key in)
- patron site's patron verification prompt is long so the
display is a little "goofy"
When a patron visits from a site that is using a Patron Verification
Prompt which exceeds the maximum # of characters*, the system display can
be "blank" or confusing, and especially strange when system writes over
part of the lines on the screen, leaving other characters visible.
*maximum #: see detail later in message
---))) To improve the display of patron verification prompts for staff and
patrons, using character-based, WebOPAC and Mil modules, I recommend that
all sites use a maximum of 62 characters.
Please keep in mind this will affect the display on your local system when
your patrons are using it for requesting, and providing service for your
patrons when they are away from the home library, as Visiting Patrons.
We won't initiate any changes here. But after reviewing the web page
showing each site's prompts, you may wish to contact me about changing
your institution's message so it meets the 62-character goal set by III.

__________________________________________________________________________
** maximum number of characters for patron verification prompt
__________________________________________________________________________
Character-based circ: 28 characters.
Use 28 for for the message. Sometimes you may see a message
that works and it's slightly longer than 28; this is only
possible in circumstances where there is a little bit of
room left on the line (when institution name is less than
the 16 allowed and/or the barcode is less than the 14 allowed).
Milcirc: 62 characters for best display. For messages longer
than 62 it will truncate - display the first part of the message,
eliminate the middle and then display .... the last part, up to
93 characters.
WebOPAC is able to use 180 characters without crashing.
