Pass-Through Searching |

last updated February 12, 2008 Transferring a
search from local to union catalog INN-Reach software
allows pass-through searching from the local catalog to Summit, the union
catalog. When the search is
transferred from the local to the union catalog, Limits are usually
retained. Limiting by Date, Language, and Material Type will be retained in a
pass-through search. Limiting by a local location will not be retained.
Limiting by Publisher doesn’t work. Scopes are not retained (pre-limiting
to a set of records, such as a local location, or type of material). Transfer from Index
Browse display: transfers the word or phrase to the union catalog, along with
some limits (date and material type, for example, are retained with the
transferred search). Index browse: more than one entry (or “catalog
record”) retrieved for the same word or phrase.) Transfer from Record
Browse display: transfers the word or phrase to the union catalog along with
some (not all) limits. Record browse: all the
entries (or “catalog records” that match the index entry) Transfer from a single
record: the system finds that specific, individual record in Summit. It does not “step back” to search for
the word or phrase used initially in the local catalog. See example of a Title search moving from Index Browse,
to Record Browse, and finally selecting a single record. Local sites have the option to customize the design of their pass-through button. Below, you'll find examples of the wide variety of buttons used in Alliance member library catalogs. |
