Subject: No paging slip for checked out items?

To: Summit Borrowing Committee

** No paging slip for checked out items **

(one response per member institution, please)

A local server can be configured to prevent printing a Summit Borrowing

paging slip for an item that is already checked out or if other holds

precede the SB request.  (You may recall that we mentioned this new

feature at Summit Borrowing Day in July.)

1. Is your site set up to take advantage of this feature, and not print

paging slips for checked out items?

        YES/NO

2. If YES, comments on (a) how it's working now, and (b) whether you think

it's still a good idea, implications for other Summit Borrowing processes,

etc.:

Thanks for replying ... I'll add a column to this web page to show which

members have set up this option.

Gary: We keep track of these paging slips to determine, after a period of time, if the request can be transferred to a different 'available' copy, should our copy still be checked out

GFU

yes

Louise: I think it's a good feature, but if the item is checked out and not available, is it appearing on the paged too long list?  I assume it is not, which is a good thing, but might cause some concern for the borrowing patron.

Carrie: We keep the slips to see if we can fill the request. If we can't fill it after a couple of days, we cancel the hold so it can be transferred to another institution.

Mark: We print them, hold them, and cancel them if they are checked out too long. (We look at the due date and cancel those that are on extended loan.  If we are the only holder, we usually keep them if the due date is between 7-10 days. And when they become overdue by 3-5 days, we cancel the holds. later: “I don't remember seeing one recently.  I may just be remembering from before the 'smart holds' where they were appearing on our extended due date items.”)[2/3/05]

Sue: We watch the requests for checked out items and cancel with re-request if other copies are available.  If not, we hold on to the request a few days and keep checking on the status.

Pam: “Like other sites, we have not been taking advantage of this.  Like EWU we were keeping the slips, monitoring the transaction and canceling if ours became long overdue or another became available.  Since we have decentralized much Summit processing this tracking is not as easily accomplished. We have been considering using this option to no longer get these slips.  The requests will still show on the borrowing sites Requested too long list and so they would come to our attention when sites inquire about them.”

WOU

Lori: We keep track of these paging slips to determine, after a period of time, if the request can be transferred to a different 'available' copy, should our copy still be checked out.

Jen: we keep the paging slips until they are overdue by 2-3 days, then I cancel them since by then they have usually been requested for 10-12 days and the patrons are probably beyond needing the materials anymore.
