We
are pleased to welcome Mt. Hood Community College to the Alliance!
MHCC's membership was made official on June 15, 2004. Profiling
work is underway to add MHCC's catalog to Summit.
As
of October, Summit includes 24,777,130 item records and 7,681,409
bibliographic records (after merging over 6.5 million bibliographic
records from member libraries). Between July and December
of 2004, holdings for over 550,000 titles
were added from new members Portland Community College, Saint
Martin's College, Clark College, and Seattle University.
The
SB Committee decided to have all members use the Summit Visiting
Patron module and to discontinue the creation of local patron
records for visiting Alliance patrons by December 31, 2004.
Pickup
Anywhere was turned on in April of 2004. The new feature supports
distance learning and allows patrons to have their Summit items
delivered to other Alliance libraries. Patrons can choose from
a list of 45 designated PUA pickup sites.
A web-based
map has been created to help users select a PUA pickup location.
Summit
Borrowing Day was held at University of Portland on July 28,
2004. Over 80 staff members from Alliance libraries attended
this Orbis Cascade Alliance sponsored event which featured topics
like New Features available through Innovative, Workflow and
Best Practices, Pickup Anywhere and Same Site Requesting. All
31 Alliance institutions were represented.
The
ER Program has been very active. Highlights from July to December
2004 include:

Electronic
Resources Module Collective Purchase
Twelve
Orbis Cascade Alliance member libraries participated in a group
purchase agreement for Innovative's ERM module. Each member
received a credit toward future software purchases in the
amount of 10% of the purchase price of ERM.
Regional
Library Services Center
• The
RLSC Task Force has completed its charge. Thank you Task Force
members!
• Next Steps include: revision of budget, meeting of campus administrators,
consultant's evaluation of planning documents.

Council
approved the formation of a Collection Development and Management
Committee (CDMC). The CDMC is responsible for developing recommendations
to Council regarding cooperative collection development. The
scope of work includes policies and projects governing the development
of physical and digital collections.
This
Interest Group addresses issues related to information, instructional,
and collections services in support of the field of education,
including K-12 teacher, counselor, and administrator education.
It provides a forum for discussion of academic library services
and collections unique to the support of teacher education programs,
including K-12 instructional materials (aka, curriculum materials)
and children's and young adult literature.

The Instruction Interest Group provides a forum for discussion
and development of training opportunities related to information
literacy instruction, including assessment of student learning
and assessment and improvement of instruction for librarians.
A
new email list has been set up to facilitate the transfer of
library materials between members. This list is typically used
by collection development or acquisitions staff to offer duplicate
copies, etc.

This interest group serves as a forum for sharing information and
discussing topics of interest to staff with reference responsibilities
at Orbis Cascade Alliance member libraries.
In
January, Council approved the Summit Catalog Task Force's recommendation to
form a new Summit Catalog Committee. The committee will be composed
of a variety of member library staff, including those that create
and use the catalog. Executive Committee will work on a draft
charge and representatives from each member institution will
be appointed soon. A link to the committee charge and instructions
for subscribing to the new SCC list will be included in the next
news update.
The Orbis
Cascade Alliance serves as fiscal agent for a great acquisitions
and collection development conference: The Acquisitions Institute
at Timberline Lodge. This May will mark the sixth annual conference.
The
Orbis Cascade Alliance Council page has been updated to include
the agenda for January 20-21, action items from the October
meeting as well as adopted meeting minutes from the July Retreat.
Council has been working on a wide variety of issues, including:
consideration of the SCTF report, III development partnership,
proposed expansion of Summit Borrowing privileges, and the
consideration of a new member application.
