Innopac uses fixed field BCode2 for Limiting a search by Material Type. When a patron chooses to limit by "material type," the system returns results based on the BCode2 value. If the code is missing or erroneous, the record won't be included with the results.
BCode2 in the local record usually comes from leader byte 6, stored in the OCLC fixed field "Type.” At the time of exporting the record from a bibliographic utility, library staff can override the value by direct command. Once the record is in the local system, staff can edit the fixed field. For example, some Alliance members override the value in BCode2 and replace it with "s" for Serial, when "s" appears in byte 7 [Bibliographic level, or "bib lvl"]: SOU, UO, UPS, Whitman, WOU. [OCLC fixed field and Record leader information are stored in Innopac's 008 field; this particular fixed field is labeled "rec type".]
For creating the master record at central: BCode2 in the local record will be copied directly to BCode2 in the master record. If the code in the local record does not exist in the central BCode2 table, it will be converted to <-> as an invalid code. Exception: When needed, a mapping table can be used to translate the local code to an appropriate value for the union catalog. Contact Alliance office.
BCode2 values set up for Summit. The local label may be different from the label used in Summit. For example, for code <j> Summit uses "Sound recordings, Musical" but UPS uses "Music Rec" in the local catalog. |
Order displayed for patrons when limiting a search by Material Type. The order of display is not dependent on the alphabetic order of the code values. | |||
