Charge

The SCC is responsible for developing recommendations to Council concerning the future of the Summit catalog. SCC identifies emerging issues and creates recommendations that aid the development and use of the Summit catalog. The scope of work includes usability but does not include circulation functions, which are the responsibility of the Summit Borrowing Committee (SBC).

The committee membership is composed of member library staff with diverse backgrounds and responsibilities including those who create and use library catalogs. In this spirit, the committee seeks to gather diverse input from all member libraries and create recommendations designed to serve the consortium as a whole. The SCC actively shares information with and seeks input from the SBC and other Alliance committees.

The Resource Sharing Program Manager supports the work of the committee by recommending topics for discussion, forwarding selected system enhancement issues, and providing background research related to vendor products and system capabilities. The Program Manager may also seek feedback and advice from the SCC membership on issues related to the maintenance of Summit.

Assignments

2006 Projects  (report to Executive Committee due by May 2007)

1.      Summit Data Harvesting
Explore Summit’s potential as a source of data (bibliographic, item, order, circulation, etc.) for the purpose of developing improved services and informing decisions made by member libraries and the consortium.  Given the integrated nature of INN-Reach and Millennium, it is expected that such data may be available through Summit or local catalog systems.  Potential applications include development of a new Summit interface, analysis of usability, cooperative collection development, and accreditation.  In pursuing this charge, SCC is asked to consult with the Accreditation Document Task Force, Collection Development & Management Committee and Summit Borrowing Committee.

2.      Summit Search Interface
Explore Summit usability and develop recommendations concerning potential new user interfaces to the Summit union catalog.  Activity includes:

·     Summit interface update based on Release 2006

·     Exploration of III options available to INN-Reach systems

·     Exploration of non-III options

3.      Open WorldCat link to Summit
Pursue this initiative as described in SCC’s May 2006 report.

4.      Google link to Summit

5.      Duplicates
Develop technical, policy, and workflow recommendations to prevent duplicate bibliographic records and/or mitigate the impact of duplicate records on patron service.

2005 Projects

1.      Internet Search Engines
Advise Council on the potential relationship between Summit and internet search engines and identify those actions that will promote patrons' ability to find materials owned by member libraries. e.g., how are patrons led from Google to Summit?

2.      Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records
Advise Council on the potential impact of Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) on the Summit catalog.

3.      Electronic Resources
Advise Council on how member libraries are managing access to electronic resources and the potential impact of WebBridge, SFX, and similar linking products.

4.      Propose specific topics for pursuit in the future
