Summit Borrowing Committee Report to Executive Committee

February 25, 2006

Summit Borrowing activity continues to steadily increase due to a variety of factors.  Two institutions (Lane Community College and Walla Walla College) have gone live with Summit Borrowing during the current year and some libraries have also added to the types of materials they are willing to loan.  We anticipate that Summit borrowing activity will continue to increase.

The Committee is currently discussing the courier drop site issue and whether to continue asking each Alliance institution to participate as a primary drop site.  The SBC will make a recommendation to the Council, as requested.

Summit Borrowing continues to run smoothly even as the total number of items borrowed increases.   We are hearing   a few concerns about the delay in delivery and return of these materials.  Although these concerns seem to be primarily anecdotal reports, SBC-ST will be reviewing the differences between courier delays and those delays caused by local processes.

SBC is encouraging just-in-time processing, so that materials are delivered as quickly as possible from the time of the request to delivery to the patron.  On the flip side, SBC is also encouraging the quick return of materials.  This is especially important for libraries who are lending short loan (3 day) materials and need to have these returned promptly.

The Committee is reviewing how the booking module interfaces with holds management. It is apparent that the booking module and INN-Reach software do not seem to work well together.

Communication

The Steering Team continues to work at engaging the entire group of  SBC members in the discussion and voting.    The Steering Team is working intentionally to accomplish this in several ways.

SBC-ST members have been assigned to serve as liaisons to other SBC members.  SBC members are also encouraged to contact SBC-ST members with concerns.  SBC-ST members have contacted their assigned committee members to ensure full participation in online committee discussion and votes.

The SBC-ST recommended a blog be started to provide another forum for member participation.  The first issue posted has been the Courier Dropsite issue.  Initial participation has been disappointing.

The SBC committee annual meeting in tandem with the Summit Borrowing Day continues to be very important to the life of Summit Borrowing.
