Testing Navigator - Discovery and Requesting

Testing coordinators

Discovery: Lori Robare (lrobare@uoregon.edu)
Requesting: Jean Fenske (fenskej@evergreen.edu)

Updated! The test records, with OCLC# included

Test records sorted by member institution.  Test records sorted by "illustrates" (condition or conditions that the record illustrates, such as multi-volume, CJK, e-book, sound recording, print and microform on same records, etc.

Send us a list of records to use for testing

Prepare a list of records that can be used to test the patron and staff interfaces. To test requesting in particular, select records that are unlikely to be needed for use in the next few months.  See below for spreadsheet template.

At a minimum, identify 10 test records: 5 monographs that will be "requestable" and 5 fitting other conditions to take a look at. Remember, the more you identify, the better able you will be to see how Navigator is working (or needs to be fixed or improved).

To give you an idea what we'll be looking for:
  • discovery (WorldCat group catalog): checking searching by various access points (headings) such as names, titles, series, subjects; checking display and use of hotlinks, display of individual location, call number and status, etc.
  • requesting (Navigator Request Engine): checking how requesting works for items that can and items that should not be requestable through Summit Borrowing; checking on referral to owning site, assignment of due date, selection of pickup location, etc.

For each record, tell us:

Send information to Jean Fenske <fenskej@evergreen.edu> by Tuesday, October 7.

Use the spreadsheet template (click here) to supply information about the record number, title, etc. and whether it's one of your records that we can use to test requesting.

Identify records that have these characteristics:

monographs
note: we need at least 5 records that can be used to test requesting (monographs available and loanable through Summit Borrowing)
  1. call numbers different: attached item or checkin record has a call no. different than that in bib. record
  2. bib record with no record attached
  3. single item attached (if you have one that will stay "checked out" please note that so we can observe how Navigator handles unavailable items)
  4. multiple COPIES
  5. multiple VOLUMES (regardless of nomenclature such as v., vol., pt., part, section, ptie, etc.)
  6. multiple parts in different format (e.g. text and CD; video and guidebook)
  7. item record with barcode, location, or other info in VOL field (i.e. VOL field has non-volume info- shouldn't be the case, but some may still exist in your database)
  8. print and electronic on one record
  9. print and microform, two different records
  10. print and microform on same record
  11. a title with two or more different editions (2nd edition and 3rd ed., for example, or different publishers)
  12. on order
  13. electronic resource, monograph (e.g. EBook)
  14. bib. branch code is "multi", so attached records have different locations
  15. local note field tagged 590
  16. various types such as sound recordings, maps, scores,
  17. CJK or Cyrillic
  18. various STATUS, such as
<a> Waiting Pickup (Not available)
<b> Bindery
<d> Damaged
<m> Missing
<o> Lib Use Only
<s> On Search
<t> In Transit
<x> To be replaced (Replace/Order)
<y> On Display (Special display)
[etc.]
serials
  1. with checkin record only
  2.  with checkin record and some item(s) attached - titles with different editions (so we can test identifying -- and requesting -- a specific edition)
  3. electronic resource
