Summit Catalog Committee - Material Type Working Group

Charge and Membership

This group is charged with determining if a ‘best practices’ list of material types can be developed that would allow libraries to use more specific material types than provided for by the standard MARC Type of Record codes. This group should map customized material type codes back to the standard MARC codes so that Summit can continue to limit searches by the standard material type of record. This group may also consider the adoption of customized material types for display of icons and search limiting in the Summit Catalog. This group will produce a brief report with recommendations for action by Feb. 15, 2008.

Problem: The III WebOPAC includes the ability to display an icon for each resource in a search results screen that can help the user quickly determine the physical format of the items in the result set. Many libraries are beginning to use non-standard codes in the Material Type fixed field so that icons can be displayed and search limits can be made for additional, often more specific, material types (e.g. ebooks or videos). Custom material types cannot currently be mapped to a standard MARC material type that can be used consistently across records from all Alliance member libraries in the Summit Catalog.

The working groups are composed of individuals nominated by the Summit Catalog Committee representatives of Alliance institutions; a list of working group members is posted on the SCC web page. Each working group has a liaison who is also a member of the SCC Steering Team. The Steering Team liaisons will be responsible for initially convening the working groups and communicating with the Steering Team about their ongoing progress. Working groups are free to appoint a leader who is different from their liaison to the Steering Team.
