Courier bags

Purpose, description, and use

protect and address item(s) to requesting institution. Group together multiple items going to same institution.

Courier bags are re-usable bags for shipping materials between institutions. They are used only for Summit Borrowing, and not for InterLibrary Loan, internal campus deliveries or other purposes. Each bag is made of heavy, 10 oz. nylon sometimes called "Cordura", and has a top zipper and an inside-entry clear window for holding the label. Alliance currently has three sizes of courier bag: small, 12 x 14; large, 14 x 18; and extra large, with box bottom, 17 x 20. Caution: do not exceed maximum allowed weight per bag: 35 lbs.

Packing

See Packing items into courier bags for tips on efficiently packing the bags and reducing item damage.

Supply

Design: Alliance, in consultation with OBC

Production: Alliance will order additional bags, as needed, generally not more than once a year.

Local supply: To avoid running out of bags, consider keeping a large sign (such as laminated page or cardboard) toward the bottom of the pile of bags, at least a day's worth from the bottom, warning to round up bags from other work areas or request more from the list. (see Bag shortages, below)

Dirty or damaged bags

Dirty window? Please try to clean it, first with water or soap and water. If using a cleaning product, test first; some chemicals damage and scratch the plastic so it's not longer clear and read-through. The brand "un-du" works well for removing dirt, ink, and adhesive, and does not damage the plastic. Dirty bag? contact Alliance office. Damaged? contact Alliance office; Alliance arranges for bag repairs.

Temporary bag shortages

consult with Summit Borrowing institution rep.; if you need to request Summit Borrowing bags, send a note on the Summit circ email list requesting bags, and specify which size is needed. Bags tend to pool up at some sites; when you notice that you are accumulating more than you need, please help disperse the supply by sending some to other libraries: fold them in half and insert into daily shipments. (If you are needing brown ILL-InterLibrary Loan bags, send a note to the Courier email list)
